He was shocked, but what did he expect? When you step on the rim of an empty bowl, it will fly up and whap you on the nose. It was so funny, I snorted a laugh.

Bad idea. His eyes became explosions of gasoline. “Oh, you’ve done it now, man, I can’t stand to be laughed at, no way!”

“I’m sorry, it slipped out.”

“Yeah, well, you’re fixing to slip out too.”

He thundered toward me, one step at a time. I began backing up. The brute had crossed over the line into Dangerous Territory, and my mind was racing.

“Steel, I must warn you that I’m an expert in Dog Karate.”

He stopped. “Nah you ain’t.”

“Yes, I am.”

“Ain’t.”

“Am.”

“Yeah, but I’m twice as bigger than you, and three times as meaner.”

“With karate, it doesn’t matter.”

He glanced over at Scamper. She was sitting up now, watching the show with sparkling eyes. “Hey Scamp, he says he knows fightin’ tricks.”

“Well, he’s pretty tricky.”

“So…what do you think?”

She fluttered her eyelashes. “All I can say is, I’d just hate to be the cause of a big fight.”

He turned back to me, and a deep growl rumbled in his throat. “You’re toast!”

Okay, let’s get it over with. The big ox jumped into the middle of me, buried me, and proceeded to hammer on me with all of his paws. Then he did a number on my ears with his teeth. I got the impression that this wasn’t his first brawl.

Above the roar of Big Boy’s growling, I could hear Miss Scamper chirping on the sidelines. “Ooo, good move! Now, you boys don’t hurt anyone!”

I was getting creamed. Lucky for me, after using me for a mop for about five minutes, he ran out of breath and had to stop for air. I was able to scramble out of the grisp of his grasp, and burned a path straight to the pickup, went flying over the tailgate, and made a graceful landing in the back.

Whew! I knew I was safe back there, I mean, there was no way the big ape could jump that high, so I seized the opportunity to…well, mouth off and win back a few points. Hee hee. I love doing that.

I leaned over the side of the pickup and gave him a good blistering. “Steel, you’re such a loser. You had me down and couldn’t finish the job. Ha! You ran out of breath, for crying out loud! You’re out of shape, pal. Real fighters stay in shape.”

Now get this. A look of sadness swept over his face and he hung his head. Miss Scamper was watching, and she marched over to him. “I wouldn’t let him talk to me like that!”

“Yeah, but he’s right. I ain’t worked out in three months.”

Her gaze snapped back and forth between us. “Well, I never…is that all you can say?” He nodded his big head. She stamped her foot. “Steel, this is shameful! He was messing with your food bowl!” He nodded. “Now you
